Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) uses Super Bowl to launch latest drive for more gun control

The Giants beat the Patriots 21 to 17 in the 2012 Super Bowl where no one turns down the sound on commercials that can sometime be as interesting as the game itself.  One in particular stood out on February 5, showing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino vying for their local teams, food etc.  But the real focus of the 30 second commercial was a new push by Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) for more gun control.
Bloomberg and Menino co-founded the organization in 2006 which currently has more than 600 mayors nationwide participating.  Their main thrust is to keep criminals from getting illegal guns.
A good example of their work is the recent sting by MAIG at an Arizona gun show, a state where gun laws are the loosest in the nation.  MAIG investigators bought guns from a private weapons dealer there without anything but the money it took to make the purchase.  They even told the seller they probably could not pass a background check.  The seller simply laughed at their comment and sold them the guns, which is illegal.
MAIG plans to keep the heat on for more gun control right through the November election, although the Democrats still cringe at the thought of supporting any gun discipline legislation.  Unfortunately, there are more people in the U.S. with guns now and these newly created National Rifle Assn. gun worshippers are fixated on no control so anyone can buy a gun and take it anywhere.  And there lies the problem.

Arizona gun show sting

According to a Reuters report, “Members of the MAIG says it is not trying to take guns away from their legal owners, just to close loopholes that allow criminals to get guns and move them around undetected.”  Although murder is down in New York and nationwide, the mayors also comment that they still see too many killings of cops and teens.  It is rare for a day to go by in Arizona without a shooting, some of which end up as deaths.
This gun show loophole/background checks issue is one area that needs fixing.  But another is required education and training before you can own a gun.  Arizona has nothing, zip.  Most states don’t.  I decided to ask an expert so I contacted Ladd Everitt, Director of Communications for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and asked the following question: “Can you tell me the average gun training/education a gun owner is required to have?”  His answer below.

“If they’re simply purchasing firearms, none whatsoever.  If they are going to be carrying that gun in public, they MIGHT be required to have training.  In 28 states you can now openly carry a loaded gun in public with no permitting, screening or training.  Four states now require no permitting, screening or training to carry a concealed firearm in public.

And even in ‘Shall Issue’ states that require one to obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm in public, several have no training requirement.  In Arizona, it is wide open.  Law enforcement would have no idea what the background of a gun carrier is until he opens fire (unless that individual voluntarily obtained a permit to carry a firearm into certain sensitive public spaces).”
Phew!  That means a mentally unstable person from Arizona could walk into a gun store there and buy a Glock 19 with a 15-round clip, hop in his car, and assuming Congress passes HR 822, the federal open-carry bill, with a carry permit drive to any state and commit mass murders like Jared Loughner in Tucson and Seung Hui Cho at Virginia Tech.  Assuming he wasn’t caught, he could be on his merry way to another state to commit more mayhem.  Only in America.
More on MAIG later.

  1. Mr Dunning, that if fine by me. Take you're ball and go home. I will concede that this blog is yours and you my do as you wish. However, let it be made perfectly clear, I have abided by the rules that you have arbitrarily made, and respectfully countered every one of those arguments presented. If you cant stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen, Sir! I was under the impression that you wanted to discuss issues like these, but if all you want are rants and no one to see them, well, you got it. There is a definite lack of commenters here on Nasty Jack, and I wonder why. Let me guess, they are either moderated into the trash, or you have no readers. Hmmm, I wonder. Make no mistake ,Sir, I am NOT trying to convert you, my point here is to poke as many holes as YOU allow me to in you're arguments. And when I do, you insult me. Funny how that works.

I have principals, Sir. And that is why I bang on this keyboard right now. I call bullshit when I see it. And all I get from you, Sir, is another load when I call you on how bad the smell is getting. Not usually the one to make generalizations, this is the same exact problem I have with Mr Everitt, he cannot stop piling the BS on.

So, if I get all of this “reasoned discourse” correct, you sit on you're all knowing throne, sharing generations of Solomon-esqe wisdom with the unwashed. And here I sit, the unlearned peon, waiting to be educated by those in ivory towers. Is that correct, Sir? Am I just too stupid , too damn dumb, to point out the flaws in an argument presented to me? Should I just sit back and take an all out text assault on my God given right to self preservation, Sir? Does it offend you that you may have just encountered a Man, who also possesses a backbone, when it is becoming more and more apparent you may be lacking same?

Intellectual honesty claims another hash-mark in the win section, Sir. I hope that you can see the tally board from your monitor, because I will make sure that the rest of us will.

    Till next time

  2. Mr. Woodrow…The lying tactics of the GOP is legend since GWB entered the White House. I even gave you the master, Karl Rove. What other planet have you been on?

I made an assumption on the Bloomberg sting and will concede to your knowledge of the law. However, if this is such a federal offense, why has no one been arrested, and with Republicans backing gun rights, why has there been no outcry over the incident? Simply because it shows such disregard for the law and public safety, particularly in Arizona, and the right is embarrassed, including the NRA.

Your problem with Ladd Everitt is the fact that he and CSGV are beginning to make headway in convincing the public loose guns are dangerous and that there should be more, sane gun control.

When it comes to your spewing of rhetoric on gun rights and an unbending crusade to put a gun in the hands of every person in the U.S. and let them wag their weapon around just anywhere they want, and covering this endless prattle over and over, you are simply brainwashed by the NRA and based on this inflexible philosophy I see no purpose in our continuing this dialogue.

    Goodbye Mr. Woodrow

  3. Mr Dunning,
    First off, you said ;
“Your reference to MAIG/Conservapedia”- “that it is often more likely that the right would lie when the truth is better.” Back that statement up. I dare you to prove the facts presented are incorrect. There are footnotes on Conservapedia, where are yours?

    Second,
“And Bloomberg's Arizona gun show sting is a fact that cannot be denied. Also, do you know for sure that the purchased guns were taken out of state?” I specifically refered to someone from out of state purchasing any firearm in another state and taking possession of said firearm. From ATF:

    http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html#state-purchase

“Q: May a person (who is not an alien) who resides in one State and owns property in another State purchase a handgun in either State?

If a person maintains a home in 2 States and resides in both States for certain periods of the year, he or she may, during the period of time the person actually resides in a particular State, purchase a handgun in that State. However, simply owning property in another State does not qualify the person to purchase a handgun in that State.

    [27 CFR 478.11]”

and this article says that a Glock pistol was bought:

    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/bloomberg-is-criticized-for-arizona-gun-show-scrutiny/

Gee, Mr Dunning, it occurs to me that these boys committed a FEDERAL FELONY. I never said they took them out of state.

    Third:
“Mr. Everitt does not make up his facts ” Well, he does, and i will post again to prove it. I have seen it on his twitter feed, however, since I don't do the twitter, I rely on seeing it elsewhere on these internets. MTC!

    And Finally:
“I have complete confidence in every piece of material supplied to me by the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. However, you, Mr. Woodrow, are still spewing out the same rhetoric I have heard for years from gun idolaters, all of which can be traced back to the NRA site. “

So, am I to believe when I take an educated position on the subject of the RKBA, which you,Sir, call “spewing”, and then you taking the opposite position, from the standpoint of CSGV, is not “spewing” ? How disingenuous is that? This strikes me as pathological egalitarianism, Sir, and I take offense to that. Civility indeed. I do not “idolize” (idolators) or “worship”anything, Sir, guns included. And any rhetoric you see coming from me, I can assure you that it did not come from the NRA. Gun Bubba, Really? Pro Rights enthusiast is more like it.

To quote L. Neil Smith : “I'm tired of being considered some kind of criminal or dangerous throwback for no other reason than that I value, exercise, and defend my rights under the first ten Amendments to the United States Constitution.”

This one rings particularly true here, Mr Dunning, because I do not consider you to be a criminal or a throwback, but I do believe you have no regard for personal liberty at all. And having contempt for others just because they know that rights are absolute, that they apply to all men, that they are guaranteed by law, and are not subject to a vote, is disgraceful. You live under those rights also. You don't have to exercise them, if you wish, but you do not get to tell others which rights they cannot exercise. This is bigotry, plain and simple. Micheal Bloomberg fits this to a tee.

    Don't be like Mike!

  4. Mr. Woodrow…MAIG is an interesting organization because it serves a need that is finally beginning to make sense to many Americans: We need more sane gun control. You make a lot of claims against Mayor Bloomberg-you accused me of being emotional-which are purely emotional themselves, many of, which I am sure are fed to your ravenous appetite as a gun worshipper, by the NRA. I am confident about the facts in my article; refute them if you will with facts that I can source.

Your reference to MAIG/Conservapedia is very interesting. It is a conservative source, and we do know from conservative politics, namely Karl Rove, that it is often more likely that the right would lie when the truth is better. Also, if we looked into the backgrounds of gun loving organizations from the NRA down, we will find equal or worse charges.

And Bloomberg's Arizona gun show sting is a fact that cannot be denied. Also, do you know for sure that the purchased guns were taken out of state? I doubt it.

Don't believe Ladd Everitt will worry too much over your loss of confidence, although I do consider you one of the most intelligent gun bubbas I have dealt with. And I can assure you that Mr. Everitt does not make up his facts with an organization behind him that is constantly doing research on this issue. And believe me, I have complete confidence in every piece of material supplied to me by the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. However, you, Mr. Woodrow, are still spewing out the same rhetoric I have heard for years from gun idolaters, all of which can be traced back to the NRA site.

  5. Mr Dunning,
MAIG is an interesting organization. The founder is a billionaire, one of the hated 1% , who has bought every election he has won. He claims that gun shows are arming criminals, even though the FBI has stated many times that criminal purchases from said gun show are rare.He says that Virginia's firearms laws are the reason that NYC is “awash” in illegal firearms. And he is also the Mayor that commonly refuses carry permits to people in need of them, then hands them out like candy to the rich and famous. And do not forget that this 1percenter has armed bodyguards while telling all of us that guns kill. That , Mr Dunning, is the classic definition of a hypocrite.

    Then, there is this:

    http://www.conservapedia.com/Mayors_Against_Illegal_Guns

10 of them under indictment or convicted of felonies? % others, Bloomberg included, involved in scandals, and 12 signed up nefariously or without consent? Sounds like an organization I would endorse, for sure, NOT! I thought elected officials were above reproach. Guess not.

Now, as far as the gun show in Phoenix where Mr Bloomberg sent NYC cops to buy guns, claiming that they “probably cant pass a check”, These gents committed federal felonies by purchasing firearm out of their home state. One cannot travel out of state and buy a gun without having it shipped to a FFL in the home state. But we did not hear about that violation, did we? Hmmmmm.

MAIG is a gun ban organization, without question. Gun shows are not arming criminals, Ladd Everitt has lost his credibility with me because of ad hominem attacks and made up facts, and you, Sir, are repeating this drivel. Please give us actual facts, not others lies, and stop with the emotional stuff. Then you may make a case.

  6. Jared Loughner couldn't have bought a gun and legally carried it to other states without a carry license. H.R. 822 won't change that. Those of us with licenses have been checked out, unlike Loughner, who did not have a license. Please stop misrepresenting the facts.
